Police Headquarters sources have revealed that Deshabandu Tennakoon, who is currently under a work ban and has been remanded to custody on criminal charges, still officially holds the position of Inspector General of Police.
Although his duties were previously suspended by a court order due to a case related to his appointment as IGP, the Matara Magistrate recently ordered his remand on criminal charges.
While Priyantha Weerasooriya is serving as the Acting Inspector General of Police, Police Headquarters sources emphasize that Tennakoon remains the official IGP. They point out that a motion passed by a simple majority in Parliament is required to officially remove the IGP from his position.
