NPP Claims Batticaloa Commission Report Cannot Remove Ranil’s Civic Rights

Colombo District Parliamentarian Lakshman Nippunarachchi of the National People’s Power states that the Batticaloa Commission report cannot revoke Ranil Wickremesinghe’s civic rights.

He said the commission was established under the 1948 Act, and commissions set up under that act cannot revoke civic rights. He added that if the commission had been established under the 1978 Act, civic rights could have been revoked with a 2/3 majority in Parliament.

Nippunarachchi expressed these views while participating in the “Aluth Parlimenthuwa” program on Derana TV.

Meanwhile, Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Qi Zhenhong hosted a dinner in Colombo for former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, wishing him a happy birthday. Former First Lady Professor Maithree Wickremesinghe also attended the event. Ranil Wickremesinghe’s birthday falls tomorrow (24th).
