President AKD’s 30,000 Job Promise in Mannar Sparks Controversy Amidst Election Law Concerns

President Anura Kumar’s recent campaign rally in Mannar has ignited controversy due to his numerous promises, including providing 30,000 jobs. Critics argue that these pledges blatantly violate election laws, specifically sections 82C (Undue Influence) and 82D (Maximum Advantage Promises/Donations) of the Local Authorities Elections Act.

The President’s actions appear to exploit Article 35-1 of the Constitution, which grants immunity from civil or criminal proceedings for actions performed in both personal and official capacities during their tenure.

Among other promises made by the President were relief benefits for 400,000 families starting in June, allocating Rs. 1,050,000 for road development in the Northern Province, and substantial funds for Northern coconut cultivation.

However, the President has not detailed how he plans to fulfill these promises, leading critics to believe they are merely tactics to secure votes. For instance, his promise of 30,000 jobs contradicts his previous statements in Parliament.

While encouraging Tamil citizens to join the Police Department, similar to his appeal in the last general election, President Kumar has failed to address key issues faced by the Tamil community, such as land disputes.
