A Sri Lankan delegation is in Washington to negotiate a trade deal with the US and resolve the ongoing trade dispute caused by the 44% tariff imposed on Sri Lanka under President Trump’s “reciprocal tax scheme”.
Sri Lanka has expressed interest in purchasing natural gas, petroleum products, and vehicles from the US in exchange for a reduction in the tariff.
The delegation has held talks with US trade officials and hopes to reach a policy agreement in the coming weeks.
A senior official from the Ministry of Finance confirmed the talks and stated that Sri Lanka is willing to reduce its trade surplus and lower tariffs on US goods. Both sides hope to finalize a bilateral trade agreement as soon as possible.
